Dr. Hirvela received her medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, where she went on to complete her General Surgery internship and residency training. She joined the faculty at UCSF-East Bay in 1992, and is the Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Alameda County Medical Center, Highland Hospital; she also serves as the student clerkship coordinator for the East Bay program. Dr. Hirvela's main interests are in the areas of critical care, peritoneal macrophage modulation, and inflammatory mediators.
