Dr. Liu received his undergraduate
education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he
double majored in Physiology and Psychology. He then completed his
medical education at the Baylor College of Medicine, following
which he received residency training in General Surgery at Loyola
University Medical Center and surgical critical care fellowship
training at the University of Minnesota. In addition to his formal
clinical training, he received training in basic science laboratory
research in the areas of tumor biology and critical care
medicine.
Dr. Liu served as the 3rd- and 4th-year Surgery Clerkship Director
at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School prior to joining
the department at UCSF-East Bay. This background has led him to
develop a strong interest in educational program development for
medical students and postgraduate trainees. His diverse clinical
interests range from gastrointestinal surgery, endocrine surgery,
surgical oncology, to trauma/critical care. His recent research
emphases have been directed toward clinical outcomes, and
undergraduate and graduate medical education. Yearly since 2005, he
travels to the Philippines on a medical mission under the
auspices of the Northern California Philippino Medical
Society. He is a member and an active participant in a number
of local, regional, and national professional organizations.
